SC Road Test Guide
Everything you need to pass your South Carolina driving test on the first try. No stress, just clear steps.
Quick Summary
Who Can Take the Road Test?
Before you can take the road test, you need to have held your beginner's permit for a minimum amount of time:
- Under 18: Hold your permit for at least 180 days (about 6 months)
- 18 and older: Hold your permit for at least 30 days
For teens under 18: You'll also need a certificate from a state-approved driver's education course, plus a Parent-Led Driver's License Affidavit (PDLA Form) signed by your parent confirming you've completed 40 hours of supervised practice driving (10 hours at night).
What to Bring
Here's your checklist. Don't leave home without these:
Your beginner's permit
Or your old license if you're transferring from another state
A licensed driver (21+ with 1+ year experience)
They must come with you and have their valid driver's license
Vehicle registration card
Current registration for the vehicle you're using
Proof of insurance
From an SC-licensed insurance company. If using a rental, your name must be on the contract.
For teens: Driver's ed certificate + PDLA form
Certificate from your driver's ed course, plus the signed affidavit from your parent
Vehicle Requirements
The examiner will check your vehicle before the test begins. Make sure everything works:
- Headlights (high and low beam)
- Brake lights
- Turn signals (all four)
- Horn
- Windshield wipers
- Defroster
- All mirrors (rearview + side)
- Seat belts for all seats
Your vehicle must also have a valid SC license plate. Test your lights, signals, and horn the night before!
What to Expect During the Test
Vision Screening
Quick eye test. Bring your glasses or contacts if you need them to see clearly.
Vehicle Inspection
The examiner checks that your car's safety features work. They'll ask you to demonstrate lights, signals, horn, etc.
On-Road Driving
About 15-20 minutes of actual driving. The examiner sits in the passenger seat and gives you directions. They're watching how you handle normal traffic situations.
Results
When you return to the DMV, the examiner will tell you if you passed or failed. If you pass, you'll get your license that day!
Maneuvers You'll Perform
Practice these until they feel automatic:
Parallel Parking
Park between two cones (or cars) without hitting them or the curb. You get one pull-up to adjust. After that, you'll lose points.
Straight-Line Backing (100 feet)
Back up in a straight line for about 100 feet. Look over your shoulder - don't just use mirrors. Keep it slow and steady.
Three-Point Turn
Turn your car around on a narrow street using forward and reverse. Check for traffic before each movement.
Hill Parking (or Simulated)
If there's no hill, the examiner will ask you to describe what you'd do. Know which way to turn your wheels when parking uphill vs. downhill, with and without a curb.
Quick Stop
Drive at 20 mph and make a safe, controlled stop when the examiner tells you. Don't slam the brakes - firm and steady.
Lane Changes & Turns
Signal, check mirrors, check blind spot (turn your head!), then move. The examiner wants to see you checking every time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the mistakes that cause most people to fail. Don't be one of them:
Rolling Stops
The #1 reason people fail. Come to a COMPLETE stop at every stop sign. Count "one-one-thousand" at the line before moving.
Not Checking Blind Spots
Turn your head to check your blind spot EVERY time you change lanes or merge. Mirrors aren't enough. The examiner is watching for this.
Using Mirrors Only When Backing
When backing up, turn around and look through the rear window. You can glance at a backup camera, but it can't be your main view.
Forgetting to Signal
Signal before EVERY turn and lane change. Turn it on early (about 100 feet before), not at the last second.
Wrong Lane After Turning
After turning left, you should move to the right lane (unless told otherwise). The examiner won't remind you - you need to do it automatically.
If You Don't Pass
It's okay - lots of people don't pass on their first try. Here's what happens:
- 1st failure: Wait 2 business days to retest
- 2nd failure: Wait 7 calendar days to retest
- 3rd+ failure: Wait 30 calendar days to retest
Ask the examiner what you need to work on. Most people pass on their second try with a little more practice.
Tips to Pass on Your First Try
Practice the route
Drive around the DMV area before your test. Get familiar with the streets, signs, and traffic patterns.
Exaggerate your head movements
Make it obvious when you're checking mirrors and blind spots. The examiner needs to SEE you looking.
Stay calm
Take a breath before you start. Drive like you normally would with a parent in the car - confident but careful.
Go early
Arrive at 8:30am when the DMV opens. Shorter lines and you'll be less stressed.
Know your car
Practice in the same car you'll test in. Know where all the controls are without looking.
Follow the speed limit
Not faster, not way slower. Drive at or slightly under the posted limit. Check your speedometer often.
