SC REAL ID Guide

Everything you need to get your REAL ID in South Carolina. Gather your documents once, get it done right the first time.

REAL ID Enforcement is Active

As of May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID (or valid passport) to board domestic flights and enter secure federal buildings. Your SC license must have a gold star to be REAL ID compliant.

Quick Summary

Cost: Same as regular license renewal
Valid for: Up to 8 years
Where: Any SC DMV branch (walk-in)
Online option: Sometimes (if docs on file)

Do You Actually Need a REAL ID?

Not everyone needs one. Here's the breakdown:

You NEED a REAL ID to:

  • Board domestic commercial flights
  • Enter secure federal buildings
  • Visit military installations

Unless you have a valid US passport or military ID

You DON'T need a REAL ID to:

  • Drive
  • Vote
  • Access federal benefits (Social Security, VA, etc.)
  • Receive emergency services

Have a valid US passport? You can use that instead of REAL ID for flights and federal buildings. A REAL ID is just a convenient alternative if you don't want to carry your passport.

Documents You Need

You'll need to prove four things: who you are, your Social Security number, where you live in SC, and any name changes. Here's exactly what to bring:

Important: You must bring ORIGINAL documents. The DMV will not accept photocopies, scans, or pictures on your phone. If a document is laminated (like some birth certificates), that's usually okay.

1. Proof of Identity (Pick ONE)

This proves who you are and that you're a US citizen or lawful resident:

US Passport or Passport Card

Must be unexpired. This is the easiest option if you have one.

Recommended

Certified Birth Certificate

Must be government-issued with a raised seal. Hospital birth certificates don't work.

Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization

For naturalized citizens

Consular Report of Birth Abroad

For US citizens born outside the country

Lost your birth certificate? You can order a certified copy from SC DHEC (if born in SC) or the vital records office in the state where you were born.

2. Social Security Number (Pick ONE)

The DMV will verify your SSN with the Social Security Administration:

Social Security Card

The actual card issued by SSA

Recommended

W-2 Form

Shows your full SSN

SSA-1099 Form

Social Security benefit statement

Pay stub with full SSN

Must show all 9 digits (some only show last 4)

Lost your Social Security card? Request a replacement at ssa.gov - it's free and you can do it online.

3. Proof of SC Address (Pick TWO)

You need two different documents showing your current South Carolina physical address. No P.O. boxes.

1

Current SC driver's license or ID card

Your existing license counts as one of the two documents

Easiest first document

For your second document, pick one of these (must be dated within last 90 days):

2

Utility bill

Electric, gas, water, cable, internet, or phone bill

2

Bank statement

Or a signed letter from your bank on letterhead

2

Insurance documents

Auto, health, or home insurance showing your SC address

2

Mortgage statement or property tax bill

For homeowners

2

Lease or rental agreement

For renters - must show your name and SC address

2

Paycheck or pay stub

With your SC address

2

Government mail

Social Security, Medicare, IRS, or other federal/state agency mail

Live with parents or a roommate? If bills aren't in your name, you may need the account holder to write a letter confirming you live there, plus bring their ID. Check with your local DMV first.

4. Name Change Documents (If Applicable)

If your current legal name is different from what's on your birth certificate, you need to show the paper trail connecting them.

Common scenarios:

Changed name through marriage

Bring your certified marriage certificate

Changed name through divorce

Bring your divorce decree showing the name change

Legal name change (court order)

Bring the certified court order

Multiple name changes

Bring ALL documents showing the progression from birth name to current name

Shortcut: If you have a valid US Passport with your current legal name, you can use that instead of bringing all your name change documents.

Fees

REAL ID costs the same as a regular license or ID card:

Type Fee
Driver's License (10-year) $28
Driver's License (5-year, age 65+) $9
ID Card (age 17+) Free
ID Card (ages 5-16) $5
CDL upgrade to REAL ID CDL $25

Payment accepted: cash, check, money order, or debit/credit card.

Where to Go

Option 1: Any SC DMV Branch (Walk-in)

No appointment needed for REAL ID. Walk in during business hours with all your documents. Find your nearest branch at dmv.sc.gov/locations.

Tip: Go early in the morning or mid-week for shorter lines.

Option 2: Online (Limited)

You may be able to upgrade online at scdmvonline.com if:

  • • Your documents are already on file with SC DMV
  • • You have a valid vision exam on file
  • • Your information hasn't changed

Use the "Sweet Caroline" app to check if you're eligible for online renewal.

Tips to Avoid Multiple Trips

Double-check your documents

Make sure names match exactly across all documents. A missing middle name or different spelling can cause rejection.

Bring more than you need

If you have multiple address proofs, bring them all. Better to have options if one gets rejected.

Check document dates

Address documents (except your current license) must be dated within the last 90 days.

Update SSA first if needed

If you've changed your name, update Social Security first. The DMV verifies your SSN electronically.

Use the checklist tool

SC DMV's "Sweet Caroline" app walks you through exactly what you need. Use it before you go.

Go early

DMV opens at 8:30am. The earlier you arrive, the shorter your wait.
