Recommended

Step 1: Get Your Motorcycle Permit

Already have an SC driver's license? You can skip the permit and go straight to the skills test or MSF course. The permit is only required if you don't have any SC license.

To get your permit:

1

Be at least 15 years old

South Carolina allows permits at 15

2

Pass the written knowledge test

30 questions, need 24 correct (80%). Covers road rules, signs, and motorcycle-specific safety.

3

Pay the permit fee

$2.50 for the permit + $2 for the written test

Study tip: Download the SC Motorcycle Operator's Manual from the DMV website. The test questions come directly from this manual.

Permit restrictions:

  • No riding after dark
  • No passengers
  • No interstate highways
  • Must hold permit for 180 days before taking skills test

Step 2: Pass the Skills Test

After holding your permit for 180 days (or if you already have an SC driver's license), you can take the motorcycle skills test at a designated DMV branch.

Test basics:

  • Conducted in a parking lot, not on public roads
  • Speeds around 12-15 mph - slow and controlled
  • You bring your own motorcycle
  • Appointments required - not walk-in
  • Only at designated branches (not all DMVs)

Under 21? You must wear a helmet and eye protection during the test (and while riding in general).

Skills Test Maneuvers

Here's what you'll be asked to do:

Cone Weave

Weave through 5 cones in a slalom pattern - right of the first cone, left of the second, and so on. Don't touch or skip any cones, and don't put your foot down.

Points off for: Touching a cone, skipping a cone, putting foot down

U-Turn

Make a tight U-turn within a marked box (usually about 20 feet wide). Stay within the lines and don't put your foot down.

Tips: Turn your head to look where you want to go. Accelerate slightly through the turn.

Quick Stop

Accelerate to about 12-15 mph, then stop as quickly as possible when signaled. Use both brakes smoothly without locking up.

Points off for: Skidding, not stopping quickly enough, losing control

Swerve/Obstacle Avoidance

Ride at speed, then swerve around an obstacle (cone or marker) without braking. Tests your ability to steer quickly.

Key: Push on the handlebar in the direction you want to go (countersteering)

Curve/Corner

Navigate through a curved path marked by lines. Stay within the boundaries while maintaining steady speed.

Tips: Look through the curve, not at the ground. Don't decelerate mid-curve.

Automatic fail: Stalling your engine 4 times during the test is an automatic failure. Make sure you're comfortable with your bike's clutch and throttle.

What to Bring

Your motorcycle

Street-legal, registered, and insured. All lights, signals, horn, and brakes must work.

Your permit or driver's license

Current SC motorcycle permit or existing SC driver's license

Proof of insurance

Insurance card for the motorcycle you're testing on

Registration

Current registration for the motorcycle

Helmet (required if under 21)

DOT-approved helmet. Recommended for everyone regardless of age.

Proper riding gear

Long pants, closed-toe shoes (over the ankle is best), gloves, and eye protection

Alternative: MSF Course (Skip the DMV Test)

MSF Basic Rider Course

Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course and you can skip both the written and skills tests at the DMV. Just bring your completion certificate.

Why take the MSF course?

Skip both DMV tests (written + skills)
Professional instruction from certified coaches
Motorcycles provided (don't need your own)
Insurance discounts from many providers
Learn proper technique from the start
No 180-day permit wait required

SC DMV-authorized training providers by region:

  • Upstate: Greenville, Spartanburg area
  • Midlands: Columbia area
  • Lowcountry: Charleston area
  • Pee Dee/Grand Strand: Florence, Myrtle Beach area

Search "MSF course South Carolina" or check msf-usa.org to find a course near you. Courses typically cost $150-$300 and take a weekend.

What If You Fail?

1st or 2nd failure

You can schedule another attempt. Practice the maneuvers you struggled with and try again.

3rd failure

After failing 3 times, you cannot retake the skills test at any SC DMV. Your only option is to:

  • • Complete an SCDMV-authorized motorcycle safety course
  • • Pass that course's riding evaluation
  • • Bring the completion certificate to the DMV

This is another reason many people take the MSF course first - you get professional instruction and avoid the risk of using up your DMV attempts.

Fees

Item Fee
Motorcycle beginner's permit $2.50
Written knowledge test $2
Motorcycle license (Class M, 10 years) $25
Motorcycle endorsement (add to existing license) $5
MSF Basic Rider Course (varies by provider) $150-$300

Tips to Pass

Practice slow-speed control

The test is all about low-speed maneuvering. Practice tight turns and controlled stops in a parking lot.

Look where you want to go

Your bike follows your eyes. In turns and U-turns, turn your head to look through the turn, not at the ground.

Know your friction zone

Master the clutch. Smooth clutch control is essential for low-speed maneuvers without stalling.

Keep feet on pegs

Putting your foot down = points off. Practice keeping your feet up even at very slow speeds.

Use the rear brake in turns

Light rear brake helps stabilize the bike in slow, tight turns. Don't grab the front brake mid-turn.

Relax your grip

Tension makes you stiff. Keep a firm but relaxed grip and let the bike move underneath you.
